In my last blog post (read it here), I talked about where my creative inspiration comes from for my jewelry. As promised, this post will show how I move from an idea to a finished product. This painting was my starting point. I was really interested in the geometric pattern on the yoke of the brunette's dress. I thought it would make a great pendant for a necklace. Here's the sketch I made based off of the painting. I love sketching in this notebook because it's got these great hash marks every 1/4". After sketching, I start measuring, cutting, and shaping the wire. I arranged the pieces in reverse order before soldering. After the preliminary arrangement, I decided to add a black onyx cabochon in a fine silver bezel for added texture and interest. After soldering, I filed, shaped, and polished the piece. Here's the final piece, along with a pair of earrings I think pair nicely with it.
I hope you enjoyed this peek into my creative process. Leave any questions in the comments!

Welcome to the first in what I hope will be a recurring series on Moon Star Adri customers. Today, I'll be featuring Kate, who asked me to create jewelry for a corporate black-tie event she was attending for husband's job. She had already selected her dress, a ML Monique Lhullier navy gown with a lace overlay. Kate is a true Vintage Darling (and self-professed Downton Abbey fanatic), and I really wanted to create something special that nodded to the early 20th century without venturing too far into costume territory. Kate really gave me a lot of free license with her design. I ended up creating a pair of chandelier earrings and a simple heart bracelet. I was so pleased with the earrings I decided to offer them as regular, customizable stock. After her event, I interviewed Kate to learn more about her side of the custom jewelry experience. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE MOON STAR ADRI TO CREATE YOUR JEWELRY? Kate: The affordable price, and your willingness to design something specifically for me. WHAT DID YOU EXPECT FROM MOON STAR ADRI AND HOW DID THE ACTUAL PROCESS LIVE UP TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS? Kate: I have worked with designers before, and I just expected to get a product. You made it more personal. You took my specific outfit in mind and I felt that the jewelry was design specifically for me. WHAT DID YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE? Kate: Your excitement about what you do is contagious! I loved your step by step pictures and that it was an open dialog between you and me. DID THE JEWELRY WORK FOR YOU AS WELL AS YOU EXPECTED?
Kate: Yes, and better! The earrings were light and I was able to wear them the whole event. Usually earrings of that size are heavy and give me a headache! IF YOU WERE TO DESCRIBE MY PROCESS AND JEWELRY TO OTHERS, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT? Kate: I would say that you provided a personalized service. You took into consideration my budget, my outfit and my personal taste. You kept me "in the loop" during the process and created an air of excitement over the pieces. Happy 2015 everyone! I hope January has been treating you well so far! Here in Maryland, it's been snowy, snowy, snowy and bitterly cold! Comment below with one of your goals for 2015 and what you're doing to make it happen for a chance to win these earrings. The winner will be selected at random on January 28th. Good luck! As my Facebook page friends know, I recently launched a new collection, Vintage Blossoms. This is my first time putting together a really comprehensive, mix-and-match grouping of earrings and necklaces, and I couldn't be happier to share it with you. The inspiration for Vintage Blossoms comes from Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden, a favorite book of mine growing up. I think all children are excited by the idea of discovery and the idea of a hidden, magical space all to yourself is very enticing. Vintage Blossoms combines imagery of natural elements - sunrises, ponds, and flowers - with man-made structures - fountains, suncatchers, and wrought iron trellises - to recreate the wondrous, enchanting feeling evoked in The Secret Garden. With the height of autumn upon us, Vintage Blossoms can serve as a stylish, wearable sanctuary to bring joy and energize you, through the long, dark days of the coming winter and beyond. |
